Hold On

Inside Curran-Fromhold Prison, Northeast Philadelphia. Francesca Heintz wrote a piece in this week's CP about the growing number of children growing up with incarcerated parents.

"More than 2 million children have a parent in prison, and statistics say they're up to six times more likely to go down that same road than other children. These are big numbers that help explain overcrowding, outdated prison buildings, overworked staffs and shockingly high recidivism rates that plague corrections systems nationwide."

Shots in the Dark

I photographed Monica Hall for a story written by Tom Namako in this week's CP. Her 21 year old son, Tayvon, was gunned down 2 doors away from their North Philly rowhouse on a February morning in 2006. To the city, Homicide victim number 39 out of 406 killed in 2006. To Monica, a horrifying life long pain that will never pass.

"The pop of six gunshots woke her. She's heard that sound before, and the ones that followed it — the thump of sneakers pounding blacktop, the suspiciously low voices of those fleeing deep into the neighborhood, and the eerie moments of silence before police sirens wail in the distance."

Don Quixote De La Mancha

Our Don Quixote resides at 2nd & Girard, gracefully watching over Northern Liberties. The sculpture is a replica of Joaquin Garcia Donaire's original, residing in Ciudad Real, Spain. Salvador Dali's sculpture resides in Marbella, Spain, but lacks the victorious stance that Donaire's has. So, Marbella, though I've never seen your statue in person, our replica kicks the shit out of your Dali original.


I dream about the days I spent wandering the streets of Havana. Last night's hangover instantly vanishing when I open my eyes and see the skies, feel the breeze, stroll the streets. Definitely one of the top cities I've ever photographed. Now the Don Quixote statue in Havana is pretty damn cool, all cartoonish and what not. It definitely surpasses Dali's, and I think it might just edge out ours as well. For civic pride's sake, we'll call it a tie.
